Wolves manager Mick McCarthy insisted his side's defeat by Wrexham was "just a run-out" - and revealed he "hates" pre-season friendlies.

McCarthy stayed in the stands throughout as his side were beaten 1-0 at the Racecourse Ground by a Wes Baynes free-kick in a game where they fielded a different side in either half.

"From our point of view it was just a run-out," McCarthy told the club's official website. "I hate pre-season games, they're just a means to an end to get fit for the start.

"We all get upset when we don't win and I'm sat upstairs out of the way because I don't want to be down in the dug-out jumping and shouting.

"We've not been back two weeks and it's a fitness exercise with some good and some not so good and that's only to be expected.

"The players worked hard again on Friday and while I don't like getting beat, it's not the be-all and end-all at this stage."
