Ivo Karlovic battered men's title outsider Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in four sets in the fifth day's biggest shock, while young stars Victoria Azarenka showed she could be a real hope for the women's title.

Roger Federer and Robin Soderling breezed through, as did Serena Williams and Elena Dementieva, while Daniela Hantuchova continued her superb run to move into the last 16 as an unseeded player.

Ninth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was sunk by a storm of aces as giant Croatian Ivo Karlovic progressed to the fourth round at Wimbledon.

Tsonga, who lost 7-6 (7/5) 6-7 (5/7) 7-5 7-6 (7/5) on Court One, was considered a dark horse for the title because of his power and pedigree on grass.

But he cut a frustrated figure as he struggled to make any impression on the Karlovic serve. The 6ft 10in 22nd seed, who reached the fourth round in 2004, racked up 46 aces and a phenomenal first-serve percentage of 77% as he set up a fourth-round meeting with seventh seed Fernando Verdasco.

Roger Federer lost his first set of the tournament, but it was little more than a glitch as he continued his imperious route to what is looking increasingly like his seventh Wimbledon final.

This time his victim was German Philipp Kohlschreiber, who battled defiantly on Centre Court but still went down to a 6-3 6-2 6-7 (5/7) 6-1 defeat.

Two-time champion Serena Williams gained a routine victory in her first meeting with Roberta Vinci to set up a clash with Daniela Hantuchova for a place in the quarter-finals.

Williams, who lost only nine games in her first two matches, twice dropped serve to suggest she is not yet firing on all cylinders but still managed to hit 34 winners against the world number 53.

"I don't think I played great today at all," she said. "I'm just glad to have got through it and go onto the next match."
