Stockport are set to sign Linfield striker Peter Thompson after having a bid accepted for the Northern Ireland international.

The Hatters have agreed a fee believed to be in the region of £100,000 with Linfield and the 24-year-old will discuss personal terms at Edgeley Park.

Thompson, who has seven caps for Northern Ireland, scored 44 goals last season as Linfield secured a third successive league and cup double.

Linfield paid tribute to Thompson and revealed they had rejected a bid from Championship side Norwich for the player.

A club statement said: "An offer for the player was received from Norwich City FC but this club's Management Committee was unable to accept the terms.

"Linfield Football Club would like to place on record the club's appreciation of the outstanding contribution made by Peter to the club's successes in recent years. Everyone at Linfield extends to Peter every best wish and hopes for success in his future playing career."
