Southampton winger Nathan Dyer has been banned from pre-season training after turning down a new contract at St Mary's.

The 20-year-old winger, who has long been linked with a move to south-coast rivals Portsmouth, is now on a week-to-week deal and is therefore a free agent.

"We have talked with Nathan and said it was better for the group and for everyone if he did not train with us unless he signs our contract," Saints boss Jan Poortvliet told the club's official website.

"We are preparing the boys for the season and when you don't have a contract you can't prepare.

"We said he can sign or wait for another club but we need players who are happy here, who are involved with Southampton and who want to work at a level for themselves and for their team."

Dyer and Saints team-mate Bradley Wright-Phillips are due in court next week in connection with burglary charges following an incident at a nightclub.
