Southampton midfielder Simon Gillett has signed a new contract at St Mary's.

The 22-year-old midfielder has put pen to paper on a two-year deal with the option of a further 12 months.

Gillett has yet to start a senior game for Saints, making three substitute appearances, but is the first of the cash-strapped club's out-of-contract players to agree new terms.

He has also enjoyed loan spells with Blackpool, Walsall, Bournemouth and Yeovil.

"I feel I've been ready for a couple of years now but I've got to prove my worth and I believe I will get a chance," said Gillett.

"This is a massive season for me now and I have to push myself to the fore."
