Scunthorpe boss Nigel Adkins has taken his squad away for a week-long training break in Leicestershire with a view to improving fitness levels ahead of the new season.

Adkins is keen to instil plenty of team spirit into his players as The Iron bid to rejoin the Coca-Cola Championship at the first time of asking.

Trialist Michael Lea, who was recently released by Manchester United, is also part of the travelling party as he bids to earn a move to Glanford Park, and Adkins is relishing the chance of bonding with new-boys Kenny Milne and Garry Thompson.

"It provides the sort of environment we are looking for, without the sort of problems that you can have travelling abroad," Adkins told the Scunthorpe Telegraph.

"There is good accommodation there and the training facilities are superb. It gives us an opportunity to have several workshops on how we want to attack the season this year.

"It's about getting fit, but there is also a lot of psychology. It's about getting the right dynamic and creating an opportunity for the players to flourish as individuals, but to work within the team."
