Former Great Britain and Oldham full-back Bernard Ganley died last week at the age of 82, it has been announced.

Ganley was a prolific goalkicker in the successful Oldham side of the 1950s, scoring 1,358 in 341 games for the club.

His 219 goals in 1957-58 earned him a place in the Guinness Book of Records as the first man to reach a double century in one season.

The Leigh-born marksman, nicknamed 'The Maestro', also kicked 14 in one game against Liverpool in 1959 - still a club record - and a record-equalling 10 for Great Britain against France in 1957.

After retiring in 1961 he took up work in the media as a television and radio presenter.

He was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2001 and died last Friday, June 26.
