Widnes Vikings have suspended two unnamed players for seven days pending an investigation into a town-centre incident on Saturday night.
Club officials on Sunday viewed CCTV footage with the management and security staff of a local bar before making the decision to suspend the first-team pair.
Vikings' sporting director Terry O'Connor said: "The players have to realise that the way they conduct themselves off the pitch is as important, if not more important, than the way they conduct themselves on the pitch."
He added: "Despite reports elsewhere, no players were arrested and, on behalf of the club, I would like to apologise to the owners, staff and customers of Bar Reef as well as to the police who were called to deal with the incident.
"We will not tolerate behaviour of this kind."
