New Rochdale recruit Ciaran Toner admits he cannot wait to get started after penning a one-year deal with last season's beaten League Two play-off finalists.

The former Tottenham trainee has secured the release from his contract with rivals Grimsby to become Dale's first summer signing.

Toner is determined to help his side bounce back from their Wembley play-off final defeat at the hands of neighbours Stockport.

He said: "The team did very well last season and it is unfortunate that they didn't progress up to League One level.

"It is always a lottery when you get to the final and it will have been disappointing to lose at Wembley but the players can take real heart from the way that they performed last year and look forward to pushing on this time around.

"Hopefully I can help us to get up there be it by the play-offs again or by automatic promotion."
