Oldham have announced that Bury midfielder Dale Stephens will join the League One outfit on July 1.

Stephens, 19, is out of contract at Gigg Lane at the end of June and will move to Boundary Park as a free agent.

Bury are entitled to compensation and Oldham have made a cash offer for the player, but the final fee is likely to be set by a tribunal.

Oldham tried to sign Stephens during the January transfer window and chief executive Alan Hardy told the club's official website: "Dale is a signing for the future.

"He is still a young lad and has only a few first-team games under his belt, so it is likely that he will not figure in the first team starting line-up at the beginning of the season."
