Northampton midfielder Danny Jackman admits he is "not a great fan" of pre-season training - but believes it can be a springboard for a successful season.

The former Gillingham man was moved into midfield from defence by Cobblers manager Stuart Gray last season and was named as the club's player of the year.

He made 41 appearances during the season and insists he wants to improve on last season's form which saw his side finish 10 points from the League One play-offs in ninth spot.

He told the club's official website: "I'm not a great fan of pre-season training, it's always a bit of a struggle for me personally but it is just something that has to be done.

"The basis of the squad is good and hopefully we can improve again on where we finished in the league last year.

"Last season was great for me personally but that has gone now and I need to make sure that I do just as well again this season if not better."
