Leon Camier, the runaway leader of the British Superbike Championship, put his Airwaves Yamaha on pole for the penultimate round at Silverstone on Saturday.
He goes into the races at the Northamptonshire circuit with a lead of 99.5 points over his team-mate and rival James Ellison, needing only to finish ahead of the Cumbrian in a point-scoring position in the first of the two races to take the title.
Camier bettered the lap record in free practice and all but matched that in the grid decider, recording a best time of one minute 25.391 seconds, an average speed of 93.29mph, as he topped the qualifying leaderboard for the ninth time.
Ellison ran him close, second fastest with a lap time of 1min 25.488secs, ahead of HM Plant Honda rider Josh Brookes, with Stuart Easton completing the front row for Hydrex Honda.
