Morecambe boss Sammy McIlroy is confident that departed crowd favourite Garry Thompson will cope with the step up in class following his move to Scunthorpe.

The 27-year-old turned down the offer of a new contract at Christie Park to sign a three-year deal with the Iron.

Thompson has spent nine years at the club but was out of contract in the summer and will now ply his trade in League One with Nigel Adkins' men.

McIlroy said: "He has grown as a player for us over the last 18 months and become more and more consistent.

"If he continues to show the type of form we all know he is capable of he will find the step up to League One no problem at all."
