Mansfield chief executive Stephen Booth has moved swiftly to label local solicitor Danny Phillips' claims at a supporters meeting last Monday as "pure conjecture".
Phillips revealed he was a member of the failed Derry consortium bid and now doubts whether controversial Stags owner Keith Haslam is genuinely interested in selling the club.
"Notwithstanding this he has had no detailed discussions with me and, to my knowledge, has had no discussions whatsoever with Keith Haslam," said Booth. "I am therefore bewildered by his statements at last Monday's meeting - it would seem to be a case of either pure conjecture or `a little knowledge is a dangerous thing'."
Phillips told the Stags Fans United meeting: "The club is not for sale for just £1 - it is £400,001.
"But we came to the conclusion that Keith Haslam never had any intention to sell. We believe the parameters set up make it impossible for any honest buyer.
"So what are his intentions? If you look at what has happened since the end of the season, it would seem there is no intention to run a team next season."
