February 2009 was the month that title hopefuls Liverpool beat Chelsea at Anfield thanks to two late Fernando Torres goals, and the Reds then followed that win up by overcoming relegation-threatened Portsmouth at Fratton Park, and again it was the Spain international front man who grabbed a last-minute winner to keep Rafael Benitez's side in the race for the title.
And, that defeat led to the inevitable dismissal of Pompey manager Tony Adams the following week, while soon after Chelsea also parted company with their Brazilian head coach, Luiz Felipe Scolari, after a disappointing goalless draw at Stamford Bridge with struggling Hull City.
Later in the month, Gareth Southgate's Middlesbrough kept alive their slim hopes of avoiding relegation to the Coca-Cola Championship, while also all but ending Liverpool's 19-year wait for a top-flight league title with a shock 2-0 victory over the Merseysiders at the Riverside.
