Aberdeen boss Jimmy Calderwood has reaffirmed his desire to sign Darlington striker Tommy Smith despite a recent injury setback.

The 23-year-old had agreed terms with the Scottish Premier League club earlier this week but a long-standing knee injury meant the second stage of a medical could not be completed.

Wright was Darlington's top scorer last season with 17 goals and now returns to the Quakers to continue his rehab.

He will undergo a series of further tests at the end of the month before a move goes through.

Calderwood told The Northern Echo: "As far as we are concerned, Tommy will be joining us before the beginning of the season.

"In these kind of situations you can never risk even the smallest of niggles, and that is why the deal has not been signed and sealed."
