Half-centuries from Shahid Afridi, opening batsman Khalid Latif and Kamran Akmal helped Pakistan recover from early setbacks to set New Zealand a challenging target in the first one-day international in Abu Dhabi.
Paceman Shane Bond had pegged Pakistan back with wickets in successive overs with the new ball, but Latif contributed a steady, if occasionally ponderous 64, Afridi smashed a quickfire 70 and Kamran weighed in with an unbeaten 67 as Pakistan finished with an unlikely 287 for nine.
Bond finished with figures of two for 61 from 10 overs, while Daniel Vettori claimed two for 34.
