Former England captain Alec Stewart says that a lot of people are to blame for the fiasco that culminated with the sacking of England coach Peter Moores and the resignation of Kevin Pietersen as captain.

"You have to hold a lot of people responsible," Stewart told Virgin Media. "Let's not point the finger at one person. It's a situation which could and should have been handled a lot better by everyone involved. I believe that if you have issues, they should be kept in-house. There have always been issues that haven't gone public but this has gone far too public. Once it goes in the public domain, unfortunately there are going to be casualties and at the moment it is English cricket and the two individuals in Pietersen and Moores.
Stewart also added that he thought ECB director Hugh Morris made the best that he could out of a difficult situation.
"Grievances should have been held in house in a grown-up and adult manner and at the end of that if the issues haven't been resolved, Hugh Morris should have been brought in as a mediator. I think Hugh Morris had his hands tied and handled it as best he could but certain individuals will look back and wish they'd handled it differently."
Despite the current situation, Stewart believes Andrew Strauss is the right man for the job.
"He is the sensible option," added Stewart. "Obviously Andrew Strauss was close to being appointed before Kevin Pietersen because he had captained in Michael Vaughan's absence when he was injured and did a very good job. He's a solid character and he will make sure he gets the team back on an even keel and back to winning ways."
