Virgin Media Sport rounds up the rumours after English cricket's darkest day.
THE SUN
"The big-wigs could not forgive Pietersen — who was demanding Moores be axed — for issuing his 'back me or sack me' ultimatum last week.
And Pietersen, 28, had no idea that several senior England players such as Flintoff and Strauss also refused to back him when asked to do so by England boss Morris.
After a day of frantic negotiating yesterday, Pietersen was finally allowed to save some face by announcing that he had resigned."
THE MIRROR
"Thrust into the limelight, hailed a conqueror and soon to be married to a celebrity wife, KP thought he was an invincible winner, dragging the luddites of English cricket along on his coat tails.
How sad for England though that someone with so much natural ability, a consistent winner and threat to opponents, should find holding the captaincy his own gamebreaker."
THE GUARDIAN
"The departure of Pietersen, whose three-Test spell in charge began so promisingly last August against South Africa at The Oval, was inevitable as soon as Hugh Morris, the managing director of the England team, realised the extent of dressing‑room antipathy towards him.
It is understood that Pietersen lacked the backing of some of his senior colleagues, including Andrew Flintoff, although he is thought to have retained pockets of support. But the desire among England and Wales Cricket Board bosses to "restore the dressing-room unity", as Morris put it yesterday in a brief statement, persuaded the 12-man ECB management board to dispense with him when they met on Tuesday evening. Scheduled to arrive home this morning from a sailing and surfing holiday in South Africa, Pietersen will do so as a member of the rank and file."
THE TELEGRAPH
"Who backed Pietersen and who did not will always trouble him. The role of Andrew Flintoff in his downfall will be keenly discussed. As England's only other star Flintoff's words will have carried weight with the ECB. Hugh Morris, who canvassed the players, possesses secrets that would make any spook green with envy."
THE TIMES
"Hugh Morris, the managing director of England cricket, said as much in the key sentence of his short statement yesterday: he said that the ECB had accepted Pietersen's resignation, which was delivered as late as 4.45pm, because otherwise it would become "impossible to restore dressing-room unity". In fact, the board had decided on Tuesday evening of the need for a fresh start and had decided then to relieve him and Moores of their duties. Pietersen jumped before he was pushed."
What do you think of KP's departure? Will it ruin our chances of winning the Ashes or is it a good thing the captaincy is in more reliable hands?
