Former ECB chairman Lord MacLaurin says the current mess surrounding the resignations of Kevin Pietersen and Peter Moores marks a sad day for English cricket.

"It's a very sad day for English cricket and I'm sorry for both individuals really," said MacLaurin. "I think Kevin Pietersen held a pistol to the ECB and said he would only continue as captain if Moores was sacked as coach and, quite frankly, you can't do that to your employers.

"I think Kevin Pietersen will look back on today and think it was one of the saddest things he's done in his life. I think it's very sad for English cricket. I don't think the ECB have anything to fear over this at all. It has come out in the papers as a personal spat between Pietersen and Moores and I think the ECB met last night and made a very, very quick decision.
