Crewe assistant manager Neil Baker has insisted the club did not make an offer for Cheltenham defender Gavin Caines.

The 24-year-old has signed a new deal with the Whaddon Road outfit but revealed after signing he had rebuffed an approach from the Railwaymen for his services.

But Baker told the club's official website: "I don't really know where these quotes have come from because they are simply not true.

"We have never spoken to Gavin Caines and we did certainly not make him an offer.

"He has re-signed for Cheltenham which is his prerogative and I don't really understand why we have been mentioned because we never made him or his agent any sort of offer, let alone been turned down."
