Charlton boss Alan Pardew has released Paulo Monteiro and Dorian Smith as he trims his squad ahead of the new season.

Monteiro, 23, and 20-year-old Smith were offered short-term contracts last season but have now been told they will not be handed permanent deals.

Portuguese defender Monteiro arrived at The Valley as a free agent in February but did not feature for the first team.

Midfielder Smith was snapped up from Tooting & Micham after impressing on trial and was then loaned back to the non-league side for the rest of the season while training with Charlton`s reserves.

"It`s a tough budget for us this year and I couldn`t afford to take on anyone who I didn`t feel could play in the first team," Pardew told the club`s official website.
