Brighton chairman Tony Bloom has confirmed the club will not have a new manager in place ahead of Saturday's FA Cup trip to Wycombe.
Director of football Martin Hinshelwood will be in caretaker charge at Adams Park while Bloom continues his search for a successor to Russell Slade, who was sacked on Sunday.
"We will not rush this critical appointment, it is more important to make sure we get the right man," said Bloom.
"We have drawn up an extensive shortlist of candidates and have been inundated by a number of very good applicants.
"I am continuing the process of due diligence and speaking with the leading candidates but I do not want to put a timescale on the process."
Steve Coppell is thought to be a leading contender to return to the club he left in 2003, but Bloom added: "I have seen the names linked with the job but at this stage it would be wrong of me to comment on individuals."
