Former Brighton stalwart Kerry Mayo has thrown his weight behind Steve Coppell filling the managerial vacancy at the Withdean Stadium.

Mayo experienced Coppell's managerial credentials first hand during his previous reign at the club between 2002 and 2003, and the former defender, who made over 300 appearances during his 14 years at the club, believes he is the perfect candidate to take the reins following Russell Slade's sacking.

He told BBC Sussex: "He's a fantastic manager - second to none.

"The way he prepares you is different class. There's no blade of grass he doesn't cover with his analysis."

On Slade, Mayo added: "I feel a little bit sorry for him, to be honest. The lads will be disappointed because Russell's man management and his tactics were spot on.

"He's had time in the chair to try and pull it round but I feel he's been let down by the players."
