Peterborough defender Adam Newton has joined Brentford after his contract was cancelled by mutual consent.

Newton spent six years at London Road but after the signing of right-back from Russell Martin from Wycombe last month found himself surplus to requirements.

He told the club's official website: "It is a sad time but is a chance for a fresh challenge and one I am looking forward to.

"My six years have been colourful, there have been plenty of ups and downs and it is great to be able to leave Peterborough on a high after promotion last term."

Newton has agreed a move to Brentford with a contract starting on July 1.
